John Meyler came from quite a large Roman Catholic family.
One of his sisters Geralyn was on the same course in a different year.
There was quite a large contingent of Northern Irish Catholics, and a small contingent of Northern Irish Protestants on the course. In fact for the most part the Protestants were immigrants and it was the RCs who 'went home' on holidays.
There was as I say quite a large contingent of Meylers. They took a shy little girl from Whitehaven under their collective wing.
I liked her. John Meyler took it upon himself to - without any compromise to his being my best friend on the course - keep my relationship with the little girl a 'working hours only' 'affair'. He was coming back telling about having been to Stringfellows or whatever and at the same time making sure I didn't follow the little girl back to the narrow boat on Islington Dock she shared with a couple - unmarried I assume.
I guess John thought his girlfriend was up for Stringfellows but the little girl was a policeman's daughter.....
Time was that schoolteachers had to resign if they got a boyfriend. It would appear that it's not possible to resign from being a policeman's daughter or grandaughter.
