This is the problem with men.
Last night I saw a TV a snatch of a documentary TV programme in which a man and a woman had a conflict over a little boy. The man was really fed up because his old car had broken down and the woman was really stressed because the man had been missing for ages because of the breakdown.
This was bad enough but the little boy was 'between ' them.
The man wanted to kick the car but decided he would damage it and so invited the little boy to kick the car assuming he would do little damage. the woman was horrified because she could see that this was undermining her efforts to teach the boy to respect property and not become a vandal or yob.
In the broader context of men in particular overestimating children's capacity to distinguish contexts....
One day on Redcar Front I saw a little boy walk purposefully towards a litter bin with his food wrapper outstretched.
He was stopped in his tracks by reading a notice in huge letters over the bin reading DO NOT DROP LITTER.
He was thinking , Have I mistaken a mail box for a litter bin? Should I walk away?
At present the problem is that a lot of litter bins in Redcar are designed to contain a wheelie bin. This is great for the refuse collectors but it means the children can't reach the slot. The answer would be a step on one side which would get in adult's way but would provide a 'children's entrance on one side.
Most of the bins have lids to keep the rain out but drunks can't find the slots. £125 for a domestic waste bin that opens when approached... surely.....
Everything we do in terms of street furniture - certainly in Redcar - is far too sophisticated for it's prime audience small children and van drivers.
