The most important issue is police officers' 007 complex. They have developed - it's called narcissistic personality disorder - a canteen culture which tells them that they have power over life and death. This is not helped by the fact that some of them are Military Police in the Territorial Army. A serving officer stabbed his wife 98 times and unfortunately the local forensic psychiatric service chose to decide he was depressed - i.e. temporarily deranged - rather than simply autistic - i.e. zero negotiating skills.
Sad news this morning. Somebody says they have isolated an autism gene so now the Home Office will have to decide whether this gene will be required in police applicants or disbar them.
Specifically it should be noted that this officer was a career policeman. Having joined the service in his teens/early twenties he served for over twenty years before he took actions his colleagues could not ignore. The diagnosis of temporary insanity was probably advanced to protect his employers and colleagues from charges of negligence in allowing him to be recruited and allowing him to remain for so long in the service.
